Château d'Ardelay
Rue du Donjon, 85500 LES HERBIERS
Built in the 15th century, the Ardelay Castle would have its origins in the 10th century with the elevation of a feudal motte. With its imposing 30m high keep, moat and shooting chamber, it is a typical example of the medieval defensive architecture of the region. Despite its classification in the additional inventory of Historical Monuments in 1927, the castle, which became uninhabited, falls into ruins. The purchase in 1984 by the Ville des Herbiers saved him from destruction: archaeological excavations and restoration campaigns followed until 1987\. Today, the building is dedicated to hosting several exhibitions a year, proposed by the Ville des Herbiers as part of its cultural programming. Guided tours of the castle in July/August and as part of the Heritage Days.
