The Heritage Days at the castle of Villeneuve, historical monument of the XII and XV centuries and its gardens in Martigné Briand,
The Château de Villeneuve, a historical monument, is an old medieval house located in the middle of the Layon vineyards. A patient and total restoration, carried out according to the rules of the art, allowed, in 30 years of work, to save him from ruin. At the same time, magnificent historic gardens have been restored.
After having passed the fortified castle of the twelfth century, we first access to a huge landscaped courtyard formed by the seigneurial home and the old buildings of exploitation whose blind facades formed the protection. To the south, facing outward and based on the precepts of Léon Batista Alberti (1404-1472), an Italian-inspired garden occupies the terrace of the old house. A geometric parterre made of boxwood squares offers aplats of colored plants, vegetables or flowers. This garden is surrounded by pergolas and fountains in parallel. The medieval house that dominates it has an austere facade softened by the high chimneys and its window joineries At the bend of the terrace wall, discover an inventive orchard, overlooked by a vineyard hillsides of the Layon . Outside the walls, the walled garden of Artus, of medieval inspiration, surrounded by a charmille, has no relationship with the exterior landscape. Very symbolic, based on the cross, it includes four entities: the flowers, the vegetable garden, squares of singles and a chessboard rose garden. A labyrinth in Ifs leads to the fountain of youth. You will end with an alley of topiaries in yew and boxwood inspired by the medieval warrior.
