About the location

Hôtel du Département, 23000 Guéret

The Hotel of the Department very often called «Castle of the counts of the Marche(walking)» never belongs or was inhabited by aforementioned counts. It is in Antoine Allard, Lord of Moneyroux and treasurer of the counts of the Marche(walking) lasting the second half of the XVth century, that they owe the construction of this mansion trained(formed) by two distinct wings. The naming «Hotel of Moneyroux» is therefore more appropriate.
The main body was most probably built at the end of the Middle Ages, taking the place(square) of a more old(former) strengthened donjon. The west wing was realised between 1447 and 1477 by Antoine Allard.
In the XVIth century, a new phase of transformation(processing) is the work of Pierre Billon, to harmonise the south wing with the Gothic parts(parties) of the west wing. Given up(Sold) to different owners, the building(ship) will be transformed into convent by nuns of Visitation, who will however have the means hardly to maintain it and give(sell) it up in 1642 to Etienne Tournyol, adviser(councillor) of the King.
Divided then again gathered(combined) by heirs in 1892, the building(ship) will be finally acquired by the department of the Creuse, by means of dispossession; the services(departments) of the Prefecture, the school inspectorate and Departmental archives will then be installed(settled) there. Until he(it) becomes the seat(siege) of the Departmental Council(Advise) in 1962.
