The town of Saint-Goussaud is located east of the Ambazac Mountains, in the heart of the Marche Mountains, in the area traditionally known as the Saint-Goussaud Mountains. The origins of Saint-Goussaud are Gallo-Roman, as evidenced by the remains (ruins of a temple and a theatre) that can be seen on the Puy-de-Play (694 m), inscribed and classified as historical monuments in 1984\. In the seventh century a disciple of Saint Priest, bishop of Clermont, Gonsaldus (hence the name of the commune), who had become a shepherd, was said to have set up his hermitage there. After his death in 689, a popular cult developed on the site of his tomb. The holy man was invoked for the protection of cattle. The church of Saint-Goussaud dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. The building was listed as a historical monument in 1973\.
