Ensemble hospitalier de Lacommande
Rue de l'église, 64360 Lacommande
- Pyrénées-Atlantiques
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Built in the 19th century by Gaston IV the Crusader, this hospital complex served as a refuge for pilgrims taking the Arles route of the Camino de Compostela, between Lescar and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Today, the church and the hospital are listed as Historical Monuments. In place of the original cloister, a park with trees and flowers houses the ancient cemetery containing an important collection of discoidal (disc-shaped) funerary steles from the 17th century. The 12th century church of Saint-Blaise is a jewel of Romanesque art. Inside, in the choir, finely carved capitals represent biblical, mythological scenes, but also of daily life.
