Enter the History of Ganne Castle on the occasion of a guided tour led by Vincent Hincker, responsible for the archaeological service of the Department of Calvados. Medieval remains in the heart of a lush nature in Normandy Switzerland, Château Ganne was once the main domain of the Pommeraie family. They were responsible for the construction of the fortress dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, whose ruins remind us that it was the result of the adventure of the Norman lords who went to the side of Duke William to conquer England. The site today is a learned mixture of ruins and plants, classified Natural Sensitive Area of Calvados.

About the location

Site du château Ganne
14690 La Pommeraye

The site of Castle Ganne keeps(preserves) the vestiges of an exceptional medieval fortification dated of the XIIth and XIIIth century s. This one occupies the summit of a rocky spur and divides into a High Court of Justice and two poultry-yards. The high - court(yard) is surrounded by a levying of earth(ground) topped with a built curtain. They reached it by passing(spending, crossing) to the ground floor of one tour(ballot)-hall which still rises on about 10 m of top. Unique(Only) copy of this architecture still kept(preserved) in France, this tour(ballot)-hall finds several parallels in Great Britain and testifies the cultural community which connected(bound) both banks of the sleeve(round) following the conquest of England by Normans of Guillaume. The main poultry-yard still contains the rests of the domestic buildings(ships) and of a chapel of which ruins were recently brought out(loosened) on the occasion of archaeological excavations(searches).
