Blosseville Histoire Vivante

Visit of the church of Saint-Martin de Blosseville-sur-Mer, famous for its architecture of the 12th and 16th centuries, its furniture (baptismal font, stoup), its statuary and its stained glass windows. It is also known to be decorated every year with ancient tools, agricultural and artisanal, as well as hundreds of bouquets of flax, wheat and oats. The building is currently the subject of a major program of exterior work that led to the deposit of the classified stained glass windows, for restoration. The visit will therefore focus on historical, architectural aspects and the numerous statues of the sixteenth century, on the other hand on the discovery of the tools on display. Several questions are still open about this church, starting with the presence in this place of Saint Lézin, Angevin bishop of the sixth century. Members of the association Blosseville Histoire Vivante will be able to guide visitors and answer their questions.

About the location

Église Saint-Martin dite Saint-Lézin

In the heart of the village of Blosseville-sur-Mer, the church of Saint-Martin called Saint-Lézin was rebuilt for the most part at the beginning of the 16th century, in sandstone and flint, but it kept part of its nave and the base of its bell tower built in tuff at the end of the 11th - early 12th century, rare testimony of the first Romanesque art in Cauchois.
In addition to original acoustic pottery and a beautiful series of statues, the church has remarkable stained glass windows, including an exceptional series in a rural church: the life cycle of Saint Lézin. These stained glass windows are not visible this year, having been deposited for restoration. In addition to its religious and historical roles, the church of Blosseville is an element of the living heritage. Every summer, the inhabitants make bunches of wheat, flax and oats, hung on the walls of the church with many ancient tools. This decoration will be visible for the Heritage Days.
