Guided tour: Alexandre Choron in Sainte-Marie-aux-Anglais
In 1795 Alexandre-Etienne Choron became a teacher at Sainte-Marie-aux-Anglais and remained so for 2 to 3 years. His parents live in Caen and own land in this village as well as the»Manoir» in front of the chapel. We can be surprised when we know that he has just been a course assistant of the great mathematician Gaspard Monge at the Ecole Polytechnique as well as at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. In fact, he comes to experiment with a method he devised to teach children to read and write at the same time. Method that will be disseminated throughout France. But it is only an episode of his life full of activities: writer, composer, director of the Paris opera, organizer of concerts etc
The chapel is first remarkable for its architecture almost intact since 1150 and for the paintings that covered its walls around 1220 and of which it remains a large part. We also present an exhibition dedicated to Alexandre Choron whose work we show all facets of his activity. A guide-speaker can answer all your questions about this amazing character.
