Italian theatre of the eighteenth century, it welcomes spectators and actors since its inauguration on November 18, 1777 by Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI. This city theatre has been listed as a historic monument since 1901 and bears the name of its astonishing founder, Marguerite Brunet, known as Mademoiselle Montansier, certainly one of the first women entrepreneurs in history.
The Montansier is today one of the oldest Italian-style theatres preserved in France and one of the only ones to present a decoration reminiscent of the blue, white and gold hues of the XVIII century.

About the location

Théâtre Montansier
13 rue des Réservoirs, 78000 Versailles
  • Yvelines

A few steps from the castle, in the heart of the Notre-Dame district, the Théâtre Montansier embodies the theatrical influence of Versailles that continues to this day. This 18th-century Italian-style theatre has welcomed spectators and actors since its inauguration on November 18, 1777, in the presence of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. Built by Jean-François Heurtier, this theatre was born out of the will of Marguerite Brunet, known as «La Montansier», one of the first women entrepreneurs in history. The latter was able to use her charms and intelligence to achieve her ends. Thus she directed many theatres. Its flagship was, unquestionably, the hall on Rue des Réservoirs, which earned it the royal privilege of director of shows following the court. The soul of the Theatre remained intact throughout the numerous restorations, necessary for its good conservation.
