VISIT THE HISTORIC HALLS OF HENRI IV HIGH SCHOOL
Created in 1804 in the buildings of the former abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, the Lycée Henri IV is perhaps the only one in France to have kept medieval spaces. In addition to architecture dating partly to the end of the 11th century, it also retains many Baroque decorations. The refectory, the storeroom, the oratory, the immense library of the Genovesfains remain the witnesses of the importance, the richness and the influence of the abbey. The complex, classified as a Historical Monument, has benefited from important restoration works in recent years, including the storeroom and the cupola of the library including the fresco, work of John II Restout (1692/1768) has recovered its brilliance and will be visible again during the European Heritage Days.

The Lycée Henri-IV occupies the former abbey of Sainte-Geneviève. Having defeated King Alaric at Vouille in 507, Clovis built the church dedicated to the Holy Apostles, where he was buried, as well as Saint Clotilde and Saint Geneviève. A new church, now called Sainte-Geneviève, was built in 1130\. In 1219, the abbot of Sainte-Geneviève received a licence to teach. In the 13th century, the cloister, refectory and dormitory were rebuilt. In the second half of the seventeenth century, important works made it possible to build the library, the oratory of the abbots, the novice hall, the great staircase. The cloister was rebuilt in the 18th century. The abbey was closed in 1790\. Transformed into a central school in 1796, it became a high school in 1804\. The establishment is now one of the most prestigious in the capital.
