Presentation of the restored painting by Francisco Zurbarán at the church of Saint-Médard (5°)
At the foot of Sainte-Geneviève hill, the church of Saint-Médard preserves a painting with remarkable plastic qualities, entitled The Walk of the Child Jesus. The author of the work is Francisco de Zurbarán, one of the greatest Spanish painters of the Golden Century (period of cultural and artistic influence of the Spanish Catholic monarchy which extends from 1492 to 1681). This painting has been on display in the church of Saint-Médard (5th) since 1889, when it was acquired by the parish priest of the church, Louis-Pierre Jouan.
Last May the restoration work started 10 months ago was completed. The restoration of this painting was made possible thanks to a private and anonymous patron of the Fondation Avenir du Patrimoine in Paris. This operation focused mainly on the pictorial layer and the frame, damaged by the time and humidity of the wall against which it was located.
