From the royal residence to the courthouse.

In the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine, visit the Conciergerie, a former vestige of the Palais de la Cité, a medieval residence of the kings of France and a prison during the French Revolution.
From the Palace of the Medieval City remain the Guard Room and the immense Hall of People of Arms erected under Philip the Fair as well as the kitchens built under John the Good.
The kings of France left the palace at the end of the 14th century to settle in the Louvre and Vincennes. Judicial activity is developing there, and prisons are being set up.
Revolutionary prison. The Conciergerie became one of the high places of detention during the French Revolution with the installation of the revolutionary court. His most famous prisoner is Marie-Antoinette. A memorial chapel was built at the time of the Restoration on the site of his cell.

Come re-discover the Conciergerie with the reopening at the end of 2016 of the kitchens of the King and the redesign of the revolutionary course enriched by new collections and new tools of mediation (interactive model, bollards taking the archives of the revolutionary trials...). The Conciergerie, important vestige of the Capetian palace, offers a remarkable testimony on the civil architecture of the fourteenth century with the Salle des Gens d'Armes, the Salle des Gardes and the kitchens. Almost the entire lower level of the palace was transformed into a prison in the 15th century. One can visit the dungeons and, especially for Marie-Antoinette, the expiatory chapel dedicated to her memory, which was the site of her prison.
