Last weekend for the exhibition Fashion and beauty gallo-romaine
The integration of Gaul into the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC gave birth to the Gallo-Roman civilization. Already known for their particular outfits and tastes, the Gauls quickly adopted certain dress practices and body treatments of Roman tradition. If this Roman model, diffused from Rome especially by the representations of the emperor and his family, becomes an example to follow for the wealthy classes, we also witness the appearance of an original Gallo-Roman fashion, fruit of these two inheritances.
This exhibition is an opportunity to discover this fashion rich in colors, in which the costume and the adornment are revealing of the social rank of individuals.
The costumes of this exhibition have been the subject of historical research to make the Gallo-Roman fashion as authentic as possible. Thus various sources have been used. The statuary, the mosaics deliver representations of costumes and hairstyles. Written sources can provide information on fabrics, colours, as well as archaeological finds, including burials that sometimes reveal important textile discoveries.
