Ottmarsheim: A sustainable heritage that celebrates 70 years of production
The power plant celebrates its 70th anniversary of commissioning, for the occasion EDF offers guided tours and an exhibition.
70 years of renewable energy production! EDF would like to share this anniversary with the public during the 2022 European Heritage Days. Guided tours of the Ottmarsheim hydroelectric power plant and a photo exhibition of its construction will be offered on September 17 and 18, 2022.
A central symbol of post-war industrialization
The study and the first ground soundings of the Ottmarsheim power plant were carried out in 1932, following the construction of the Kembs plant. But the Second World War put a stop to the construction of the Grand Canal d'Alsace initiated by René Koechlin. It was not until the post-war period that construction by EDF began in 1948.
Behind the scenes of hydroelectricity
Guided tours of the plant will take you behind the scenes of this power plant alone, which produces an average of 880 GWh/year, or the consumption of 396,000 people.
You will access the usually inaccessible areas such as the control room, the engine room, the damper room and thus understand the operation of a hydroelectric power plant.
Take a photo of a post-war construction site!
The construction of this Ottmarsheim power plant, begun in 1948, is a good example of the need to revive the post-war economy. For this work, many workers came from all over France (Brittany, Normandy...) but also from other European countries. Take a look back in time by browsing the exhibition-photos dedicated to its construction and relive the intense activity of the workers on this impressive civil engineering site.
