The Ried (from the former High German riot, see also the English reed) designates the reed, the massette which is the vegetation characteristic of these zones of overflow of the rivers, in major bed or even in the meanders of its bed, old or current.
These wetlands, whose protection is a European goal (for example on the banks of the Loire, in the Camargue of course, but also in Hungary on the banks of the Danube) and well beyond, are a global challenge for the preservation of species.
Animal species? Of course. But also Man: indeed the regularization brought by these buffer zones guarantees both the fertility of the land but also the quality of the water. Indeed, these natural flood zones are also a natural filter, and we know that access to quality water is the first condition of a healthy life for human beings.
