The abbey of Marmoutier, which owned the village, had it topped with a fortress around 930\.
Pierre de Falkenstein seized the castle in the 12th century and took the title of Sire de Lutzelbourg. Later, several co-lords reigned there. But in the 16th century, it served as a den for robber lords and their leader, Franz Sikingen. The Landgrave of Hesse and the Palatine voters of Trier combined their efforts to permanently ruin the castle in 1523\. Restored in 1900 by the owner of the place, a doctor from Strasbourg who straightened some walls and built a neo-Romanesque house for his use, the building has belonged to the municipality since 1978.
