The municipality is located in Saulnois in the South of the department of the Moselle, in 8 kilometres in the southeast of Castle-salt marsh and in 4 kilometres east of Moyenvic. She(It) is a member(part) of the regional nature park of Lorraine. The site of Marsal was at origin a marsh surrounded by two arms of Seille. This village located on the old(former) Roman way from Metz to Strasbourg was marked by the exploitation(operation) of the salt, very abundant in the basement. Marsal is so built on one remove artificial, the briquetting of Seille, coming from a technique of salt extraction in Celtic and Gallic times(periods) before Roman activity(occupation).
From the XIIth century, the bishop's palace of Metz and the duchy of Lorraine argue the control of the saline of the region. In 1259 the duke Ferry III confides(entrusts) it to his uncle Jacques de Lorraine, bishop of Metz which left the city(estate) to its church by testament in 1260\. It is at that time that are established the first fortifications.
