The Petite Camargue National Nature Reserve is located south of the Alsace plain. It became the first protected nature reserve of Alsace in 1982 and occupies an area of 904 hectares (communes of Bartenheim, Kembs, Rosenau, Saint-Louis, Village-Neuf in the Sundgau) which protects a mosaic of environments in the former major bed of the Rhine.
The Petite Camargue Alsacienne managed to keep its old buildings of Napoleon III style and today works for the return of salmon in the Rhine.
