An evangelizing monk established in the 5th century a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, which led to the settlement of the inhabitants. In 762, Pépin le Bref ceded the lands that today correspond to the communes of Revin, Fumay and Fépin to the abbey of Prüm.
In 1433 Jacqueline of Bavaria, the last direct heiress of John II of Avesnes, was obliged to cede his lands, the charge of attorney of Revin, Fumay and Fépin to his first cousin, Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy. He sold the latter in 1453 to Antoine de Croÿ, count of Porcien and lord of Renty. At his death, the confession was passed on to his son Philippe and then Philippe II, Prince of Chimay, whom Charles V raised for services as Duke of Arschott.
If Fumay is a free land, its administration places it in the zone of influence of the Netherlands. Its geographical location, at the «Limits» of the Kingdom of France and on the course of the Meuse, means that the village acquires a strategic importance, both militarily and economicall
