Come admire a selection of ancient books catalogued in 2021-2022 and learn more about the history of the Stift Protestant Media Library!

Thanks to the support of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and the Fondation du Patrimoine, the Stift Protestant Media Library has been able to hireEight months a staff librarian assistant to catalogue theses and ancient works among more than 10,000 heritage documents.
With this cataloguing mission coming to an end in the fall of 2022, this is an opportunity to revisit some great discoveries and to meet Manon François who did this meticulous and not so simple work. You don’t know what library cataloguing is, or what the stakes are?
Do you want to learn more about the profession of librarian or about written heritage (how a book is kept, why digitize it or not, etc.)?
No problem, Manon will answer all your questions and comment on his favourites!
For those in a hurry, the exhibition also traces through a few panels the 5 centuries of history of the library of the Collegium Wilhelmitanum, today the Protestant Mediatheque of the Stift.

The library(bookcase) of Collegium Wilhelmitanum grew organically with the institution the name of which it bears and of that it became a jewel(flagship). Further to the passage of the city of Strasbourg in Reform, a boarding school(internship) for students was installed(settled) in 1544 in the disused convent of the monks of Saint Guillaume. From the beginnings and across centuries, the directors for this home(foyer) were eager to make available of the students, works necessary for their training(formation). A library(bookcase) of theology and of general knowledge so developed by purchases, but especially thanks to gifts(donations) and legacies. From now on, the library(bookcase) keeps(preserves) several thousand volumes of the XVIth and XVIIth century s. Fortunately, the old(former) collections did not undergo major damages: they were saved in 1860 during the fire of the middle school Saint Guillaume which was then installed(settled) in the old(former) convent of the Dominicans, they survived the war of 1870, which was fatal in the library(bookcase) of city of Strasbourg and in that of Protestant seminary(seminar) and the Second World War saved(spared) them. These books(pounds) are currently grouped(included) in a particular(special) room of the Protestant media library: the room Peter. We invite you to come discover these old(former) books!
