Musée de Bastia
place du Donjon, 20200 Bastia
The creation of a museum in Bastia dates back to an initiative of the Société des Sciences Historiques et Naturelles de la Corse in 1898\. At the beginning of the 20th century, the museum became municipal. Transferred to the Marbeuf barracks in 1922, it takes the name of «Musée Corse de Bastia». Plundered under the occupation, it lost a large part of its collections and all its archives. In 1952 the «Museum of Ethnography Corsica» succeeds him and is installed within the Palace of the Genoese governors. This new establishment is particularly interested in rural ethnography, but integrates the surviving collections of the previous one and the themes addressed are diverse. They continue to grow but, little by little, the presentation ages and the museum hardly meets the new requirements of the public. It was therefore decided to renovate and enlarge it by rebuilding the parts of the palace destroyed during the last war.
