The construction in 1872 of the new theatre, on the site of the old chapel of the convent of the Cordeliers, is the work of Rohard. Following a fire in 1883, a new interior decoration was executed by Jean-Marie Hardion and Stanislas Loison. The new theater was inaugurated in 1889\. The paintings are by Clairin. It is a building representative of the architecture and decoration of the Second Empire and the beginnings of the Third Republic.
