Plaincourault 36220 Mérigny
The Romance chapel of Plaincourault is located in boundaries of Berry and of Poitou. It belonged to the commanderie created by the Hospital workers of Saint Jean de Jérusalem. She(It) was based(established) at the end of the XIIth century. It was listed(classified) in 1944 for its very beautiful programme of wall paintings(paints) (from XIIth century till XVth century), restored at the end of 1990s. Among them, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden: the painting(paint) located in the apse redraws two episodes of Genesis (Gn 2,3), Temptation and original Sin. The artist chose to present both stages(scenes) at the same time in a single image. Adam and Eve are on each side of the Tree of the Knowledge of the good(property) and of the evil. The snake, wrapped around the trunk, tightens(stretches out) an apple at Eve. They have not eaten the apple yet, that they already hide their nakedness by means of a wide sheet(leaf). There is about twenty years, the chapel brushing the ruins was safeguarded and its paintings(paints) were restored as part of an important programme led(driven) by the regional Nature park of Brenne and the regional Preservation of Historic monuments.
