The Fort of Saint-Père was built between 1777 and 1785 to protect Saint-Malo from English attacks by the lands and complete the defense system imagined by the famous Vauban. Intended to house 600 soldiers and reserves of explosive powders, this bastioned fortification (in the shape of a star) has not known any battle and no siege.
Yet its history is well linked to major events. Part of its enclosure was destroyed in 1944 by the Germans, in their flight, to the Liberation. Since 1989, when the municipality purchased and began restoring the site, the Fort has become a venue for festivals, culture and recreation. No wonder about the story. Already on July 14, 1777, when the first stone was laid, an immense feast had gathered 5,000 people!
