Guingamp Prison is one of the first single-cell prisons in France. Inaugurated in 1841, it was born out of the desire of Charles Lucas, inspector general of prisons and Louis Lorin, architect, to apply the rational and humanist theories of confinement. The cells are arranged around a central courtyard surrounded by a passageway supported by columns. This provision allows for traffic and surveillance from the guard’s box. Peripheral courtyards and a double wall complete this original architectural ensemble. The prison was in operation until 1934\. Abandoned in 1951, it has been owned by the city since 1992 and classified as a Historical Monument in 1997.
