Invented by Claude Chappe at the time of the French Revolution, Chappe’s telegraph is the world’s first telecommuniaction system. Located on the Paris-Brest line, the Saint-Marcan telegraph is the only one to have been rehabilitated in Brittany.
You can discover its history, understand its mechanism and see it in operation during the guided tours offered every hour during this weekend of the European Heritage Days.

A significant step forward in the history of telecommunications, its history remains fascinating: a family history, an instrument of power, a coded and confidential system. Used for more than half a century, however, aerial telegraphy has a number of constraints; it is then replaced by electric telegraphy, which ushers in a new era in the history of telecommunications. '
