Château des barons, Ville de Vitré

Perched on a schist promontory, the castle of Vitré offers an exceptional view of the city. Today it is one of the most beautiful witnesses of the fortifications of the Marches of Brittany, with drawbridge, arches, machicolations. Fortified square and residence of the barons of Vitré in the Middle Ages, it is classified Historical Monument in 1872 and since the end of the 19th century houses a museum but also the city hall (council rooms and weddings, office of the Mayor).

The edification of the castle of Glass begins by 1050-1060\. Rebuilt and extended by the baron André III, like the fortresses of the King de France, Philippe-Augustus. Rebuilt and prettified at the beginning of XVÈ century by Guy XII de Laval-Vitré and his wife, Jeanne de Laval-Châtillon. Reorganisations and restorations(caterings) the from XVIth century till XXth century. Restored by the architect Denis Darcy, from his classification(ranking) in conformance with(for) historic monuments in 1870.
