Guided tour of Saint-Philibert Abbey
Accompanied by a professional guide, discover the specificities and beauties of the Saint-Philibert Abbey of Tournus during a guided tour.
Built by monks fleeing Noirmoutier in front of the Norman invader, to house the relics of their holy founder Philibert, the abbey of Tournus is one of the most prestigious sanctuaries of the first Romanesque art.
Remarkably preserved, it dominates the city of Tournus on the right bank of the Saône with its pink and ochre stones. The interior of the abbey surprises by its dimensions, its height under the vault, the light of the nave and the grand nave as well as by the slender pillars and the vault formed by transverse cradles.
The abbey church houses a crypt and the chapel of Saint-Michel. Medieval mosaics representing the zodiac are now visible. Connected to the church by the parlor, the abbey buildings unite the cloister, the chapter room, the refectory and the storeroom.
