The Romans installed an oppidum on the hill on which stands today the Fortress of Thil. One of the daughters of Charlemagne would have built the current fortifications in the shape of an ellipse In 850 the lord erected an apparatus in small rubble: the keep (current tower of habitation) in order to protect himself from the Norman invasions. From the 9th to the 15th century, Thil was constantly enlarged and modified, increasing its residential qualities while retaining its defensive prerogatives.

All modifications brought by his occupants remain(subsist) of celiers haughtiness of the XIIth century in the vaults of Romanic and Gothic style, the donjon of the XIVth century, the '"spy de l' Auxois": observation tower in 5 floors of more than 25 m of high, that can be spotted in 30 km in the round, a superb "house of the guards"...
