Discovered in 1921 by the director of the neighbouring Banque de France, this domus, a true aristocratic residence, belongs to a series of richly decorated houses revealed in recent years in the Boucle by preventive archaeology (see catalogue of the exhibition De Vesontio in Besançon, 2008).
The remains uncovered in the UFR courtyard include a hypocaust heater, a succession of rooms forming a gallery on the ground covered with three different mosaics, and two other rooms also decorated with geometric mosaics.
Discover these archaeological treasures guided by the students of the University of Franche-Comté!

Oppidum of the Sequans, Vesontio is celebrated by Julius Caesar in «Comments on the Gallic War». The exceptional defensive site in which the Gaulish city developed attracted the attention of the great strategist. The Sequan city, sheltered from its ramparts, occupies the entire Loop with organized neighborhoods and streets lined with timber-framed buildings. In the second half of the 1st century A.D., the Romanization accelerated, Vesontio changed face, the establishment of a program of monumental public constructions and the restructuring of traffic routes, will stimulate private construction. Like Rome and the major capitals, the ediles and rich patricians wanted to build comfortable houses, richly decorated with sculptures, frescoes and mosaics. The archaeological excavations that led to the discovery of the domus of the Faculty of Letters were carried out in the park of the Bank of France and under the Institute of Archaeology of the Faculty of Letters in 1921 and 1952\.
