On the program:

Launch of the game "Lost archives of Mackwiller"
A geolocated investigation that will transform the ancient remains of Mackwiller into a playground on smartphone!
Beginning of the mission in front of the Town Hall; from 8 years; Prod. Atlantide, Atelier Pandore and Archaeology Alsace.
Visit of the Protestant temple
Guided tour by Nadège Gasc, Head of the Built Heritage Unit (CeA)

Archaeological presentation of the ancient site
Presentation by Pascal Flotté, archaeologist specialized in Antiquity (Alsace Archaeology) and projection of films of excavations conducted by Jean-Jacques Hatt in the 1950s.

Tasting of ancient recipes

The town of Mackwiller bears witness to numerous Gallo-Roman remains: vast baths that seem connected to a complex (19th century), a shrine dedicated to the cult of Mithras where were discovered fragments of a large sculpted relief (1955), a mausoleum near the baths (1966). Stone blocks from an ancient monumental building were also used to build the Protestant church.
In the second half of the 19th century, the Société pour la conservation des Monuments historiques d'Alsace undertook the restoration and maintenance of the masonry of the baths, sometimes covering them under a concrete screed. Measures of legal protection were taken by the State (classification in 1875, under German government, then in 1930). Finally, the Département du Bas-Rhin acquired the grounds of the thermal baths and mausoleum (in 1970 and 1988).
Paradoxically to the richness and diversity of these discoveries, exceptional in the region, the knowledge of this site remains still incomplete.
