Massao Mascaro (1990, FR) is an artist based between Geneva and Brussels. His work engages with poetry, politics and territory. His projects are rooted as much in travel and long walks as in the careful observation of everyday life. His work explores the way in which intimacy is interwoven with movement, memory and space.
The exhibition "Ici, là" [Here, There] brings together two series of photographs, taken in Geneva and Brussels over several years, expressing two distinct relationships with time. Since becoming a parent, Massao Mascaro’s careful observation of everyday life, its repetitive nature and its inscription in time have taken centre stage in his artistic practice.
The first series travels along the banks of the Rhône in Geneva. The grey mirror of the water distorts the contours and light, creating a strange lakeside garden. Devoid of any human presence, these images lie somewhere between contemplation and allegory: the flow of water becomes a metaphor for the passage of time. The second series shifts the gaze to the domestic interior, that of the family apartment in Brussels, where the kitchen table appears after meals. A recurring motif in art history, the table here becomes an accumulation of memory and the implicit chronicle of family life. Without staging anything, the artist captures what remains there accidentally. By confronting the flow of the river with the immobility of the table, the exterior with the interior, Geneva with Brussels, the artist affirms the value of the everyday, the mundane and the non-event, and invites us to contemplate what usually escapes our gaze.

Massao Mascaro est un artiste basé entre Genève et Bruxelles. Son travail mêle poésie, politique et territoire. Ses projets s’ancrent autant dans les voyages et les marches prolongées que dans l’observation attentive du quotidien. L’ensemble de son travail interroge la manière dont l’intime se tisse avec le mouvement, la mémoire et l’espace.
L’exposition "Ici, là" met en dialogue deux séries de photographies, réalisées entre Genève et Bruxelles sur plusieurs années, et exprimant deux rapports distincts au temps. Depuis que Massao Mascaro est devenu parent, l’observation attentive du quotidien, sa dimension répétitive, et son inscription dans la durée, occupent une place centrale dans sa pratique artistique.
La première série parcourt le Rhône le long des rives genevoises. Le miroir gris de l’eau déforme les contours et la lumière pour qu’un étrange jardin lacustre se forme. Privées de toute présence humaine, ces images se situent entre contemplation et allégorie : le flux de l’eau devient métaphore du passage du temps. La seconde série déplace le regard vers l’intérieur domestique, celui de l’appartement familial bruxellois, où la table de cuisine apparaît après les repas. Motif récurrent dans l’histoire de l’art, la table devient ici une accumulation de mémoire, et la chronique en creux d’une vie de famille. Sans mise en scène, l’artiste saisit ce qui reste là accidentellement.
En confrontant le flux du fleuve et la fixité de la table, l’extérieur et l’intérieur, Genève et Bruxelles, l’artiste affirme la valeur du quotidien, du banal et du non-événement, et invite à contempler ce qui, d’ordinaire, échappe au regard.
