The Geneva Museum of Art and History (MAH) holds more than a thousand works by Ferdinand Hodler, making it one of the most significant public collections of the artist’s paintings and drawings. Exceptionally, this collection also includes 241 sketchbooks and notebooks in which the painter, throughout his life, recorded both the flashes of inspiration and the mundane household reminders of his daily life.Modest in nature, these small booklets—the size of the “milk notebooks” of yesteryear—constitute a veritable treasure trove for researchers and an inexhaustible source of information that sheds light on both the artist’s work and the man’s life and thoughts. A meticulous study of these notebooks has thus helped shed light on Hodler’s relationship with religion and spirituality.This presentation aims to shed light on the history and nature of this remarkable body of documentary material, whose significance far exceeds that of a mere archive.
Le Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève (MAH) conserve plus d’un millier d’œuvres de Ferdinand Hodler, soit l’une des collections publiques les plus importantes de peintures et dessins de l’artiste. Fait exceptionnel, celle-ci comprend également 241 carnets de notes et croquis dans lesquels le peintre a, sa vie durant, consigné au quotidien les fulgurances de son inspiration comme de prosaïques pense-bêtes domestiques.De nature modeste, ces petits livrets au format des « carnets du lait » d’antan constituent un véritable trésor pour les chercheurs et une source intarissable d’informations permettant de saisir le travail de l’artiste autant que la vie et la pensée de l’homme. Leur étude minutieuse a ainsi contribué à éclairer le rapport de Hodler à la religion et à la spiritualité.Cette présentation propose de mettre en lumière l’histoire et la nature de ce matériau documentaire remarquable, dont l’intérêt dépasse largement celui de la simple archive.
