Vom 17/11/21 bis am 27/03/22, die Ausstellung ehrt Pierre Soulages und Japan. Soulages’ Meisterwerke stehen in Einklang mit den Objekten des Museums und den Werken aus Bambus von Tanabe Chikuunsai IV.

Tenmoku-Schalen mit irisierendem Schimmer, „spiegelschwarze“ Porzellane, Lacke mit schillernden Oberflächen: Gewisse intensiv bearbeitete Werke erhaschen die der Nacht entspringende Helligkeit, enthüllen und verzaubern die Farben der Dunkelheit.
In Übereinstimmung mit diesem Erbe in Helldunkel entschieden die Sammlungen der Baur-Stiftung, des Museums der fernöstlichen Kunst, das reich an seltenen Kostbarkeiten ist, mit einigen der Meisterwerke von Pierre Soulages, dem Meister von „Lichtschwarz“, in einen Dialog zu treten. Die Verbundenheit, die seine Kunst mit der „Fülle der Stille“ teilt, und die nach den Worten des Schriftstellers Junichirō Tanizaki in der visuellen Kultur des Archipels mit den „Farben der Dunkelheit“ zusammenhängt, ist zwar rein zufällig, jedoch nicht weniger offensichtlich. Die Japaner selber täuschten sich übrigens nicht darin; schon sehr früh verstanden sie die ernste und zeitlose Poesie des Werks des Künstlers von Aveyron; Schritt für Schritt verfolgen sie seine Laufbahn seit der Präsentation eines seiner Gemälde in Tokyo anlässlich des ersten Salons im Mai 1951. Besonders gut gefallen ihnen daran die chromatischen Kontraste, die frei sind von jeglichem sentimentalen oder figurativen Ballast, sowie die imposanten und ruhigen graphischen Ausstrahlungen, die als Lichtträger gedachten und gestalteten Materialien.
In den Umrissen der aus Nussbeize genährten „Zeichenformen“, die die Anfänge des Malers charakterisierten, finden manche die Linien der fernöstlichen Kalligraphie wieder; für andere evozieren die schillernden Schichten der Outrenoirs die Tiefe der Maki-e-Lacke, dieser mit Licht überpuderten Malereien … Gegenstand dieser Ausstellung ist es, eine andere Begegnung mit dem Land der aufgehenden Sonne anzubieten, diesmal über die aufgerichteten Linien, wobei Ton und Licht die Bambuswälder durchdringen; der „abstrakten Skulptur“, die nach Pierre Soulages aus der „Schrift der Äste im Raum“ entsteht, antworten die Stangen und Knoten des im Helldunkel modellierten Bambus vom heute international bekannten Ausnahmekünstler Tanabe Chikuunsai IV. Als Erbe von altüberlieferten Traditionen und Techniken und als aktueller Vertreter einer renommierten Reihe von Flechtwerkgestaltern bearbeitet er das Pflanzenmaterial auf neuartige, bildhauerische und leuchtende Art.

Tenmoku bowls with iridescent reflections, “mirror black” porcelains, and lacquer objects with shimmering surfaces, worked in depth: in capturing the light cast by the night, certain works reveal and exalt the colours of the shadows.
It is in the wake of this chiaroscuro heritage that the collections of the Baur Foundation, rich in rare pearls, chose to converse with some of the masterpieces by the painter of “lustrous blacks”, Pierre Soulages. The affinities that his art has cultivated with the “uncanny silence” and “colours of darkness” associated with Japanese aesthetics, celebrated by Junichirō Tanizaki (1886-1965), in his essay In Praise of Shadows, though purely contingent, are no less apparent. The Japanese themselves were not mistaken; very early on they understood the serious and timeless poetry of the Aveyron artist’s work. Following each step of his career since the presentation of one of his paintings at the first May Salon in Tokyo in 1951, they have been drawn to his art’s chromatic contrasts, stripped of all sentimentality and figuration, to its imposing and calm graphic phrasing, and to the materials conceived and fashioned as so many supports for light.
Some discern a resemblance to Far Eastern calligraphy in the lines of the “sign forms” heightened with walnut stain from the early days of the painter’s career; for others, the variegated thicknesses of the “beyond blacks” suggest the depth of makie-e lacquers, paintings sprinkled with light. The aim of this exhibition is to offer another encounter with the Land of the Rising Sun, this time originating in the erected lines,
sound and light that pierce the forests of bamboo; the irregular “abstract sculpture” formed, in Pierre Soulages’ opinion, by the “writing of the branches in space”, is responded to by the stems and knots of the bamboo modelled in chiaroscuro by an exceptional artist who has today won international renown, Tanabe Chikuunsai IV. The heir to ancestral traditions and techniques, and the fourth representative of a prestigious line of basket makers, he works with the plant world with a new, sculptural, and luminous perspective.

Bols tenmoku aux reflets irisés, porcelaines « noir miroir », laques aux surfaces chatoyantes, travaillées en profondeur, certaines œuvres, captant la clarté jaillie de la nuit révèlent et enchantent les couleurs de l’ombre.
C’est dans le sillage de cet héritage en clair-obscur que les collections de la Fondation Baur, Musée des Arts d’Extrême-Orient, riches en perles rares, ont choisi de converser avec quelques-uns des chefs-d’œuvre du maître des « noirs lumière », Pierre Soulages. La complicité de son art nouée avec « l’épaisseur du silence » attachée selon les mots de l’écrivain Junichirō Tanizaki, dans la culture visuelle de l’archipel, aux « couleurs des ténèbres », quoique purement contingente n’en est pas moins manifeste. Les Japonais eux-mêmes ne s’y sont d’ailleurs pas trompés ; très tôt ils ont saisi la poésie grave et atemporelle de l’œuvre de l’artiste aveyronnais ; suivant pas à pas son parcours, depuis la présentation de l’une de ses toiles à Tokyo, à l’occasion du premier Salon de mai en 1951. Ils en affectionnent les contrastes chromatiques, dépouillés de toute charge sentimentale et figurative, ainsi que les imposantes et calmes respirations graphiques, les matériaux pensés et façonnés comme autant de supports à la lumière.
Dans le tracé des « formes signes » nourries au brou de noix qui ont marqué les débuts du peintre, certains retrouvent les lignes de la calligraphie extrême-orientale ; pour d’autres, les épaisseurs diaprées des outrenoirs évoquent la profondeur des laques maki-e, ces peintures saupoudrées de lumière… L’objet de cette exposition est de proposer une autre rencontre avec le pays du Soleil-Levant, née cette fois dans les lignes érigées, le son et la lumière perçant les forêts de bambous ; à la « sculpture abstraite » née selon Pierre Soulages de « l’écriture des branches dans l’espace », répondent les tiges et les nœuds du bambou modelé en clair-obscur par un artiste d’exception, aujourd’hui de renommée internationale, Tanabe Chikuunsai IV. Héritier de traditions et de techniques ancestrales, quatrième représentant d’une prestigieuse lignée de vanniers, il travaille le végétal d’un regard neuf, sculptural et lumineux.
