Exhibition: LONGING – woven strands, woven stories
Six artists from different parts of the world present personal narratives through their woven works, tackling issues of origin, heritage, belonging, family, spirituality and purpose.

The weaving of narratives has a long history. For thousands of years tapestries have been used for various reasons: for spiritual and religious purposes, to tell the tales of important events in society, as a form of propaganda or of protest.
In this exhibition, LONGING – woven strands, woven stories, six artists from different parts of the world present personal narratives through their woven works, tackling issues of origin, heritage, belonging, family, spirituality and purpose. The underlying sense of longing that humanity at large has felt in recent times links the artists together in an over-arching theme: longing to connect or re-connect, longing for things past, longing for people lost or destinies unfulfilled.
The American artist Julia Bland, the British-Thai painter Mark Corfield-Moore, the Swedish visual artist Kristina Müntzing, the Swedish weaving artist Emelie Röndahl, the Chilean-Swedish textile artist Mariana Silva Varela and the French weaving artist Côme Touvay all have different backgrounds and approaches in their artistic practices. What binds them together is the use of crossing strands; warp and weft; that bring to life stories that are both personal and universal at the same time.
The exhibition presents around thirty woven pieces forming a continuous journey between the interior, the courtyard and the garden of the Hôtel de Marle. It also comprises videos made by the artists. Several pieces were made specially for the show and are being presented here for the first time.

Cela fait bien longtemps que l’on raconte des histoires par le tissage. Depuis des millénaires, les tapisseries ont été employées pour des buts spirituels et religieux, pour relater les événements importants de la société ou encore en guise de propagande ou de protestation.
Les six artistes de l’exposition LONGING – fils tissés, récits croisés viennent des quatre coins du monde. À travers leurs tissages, ils évoquent leur histoire et interrogent les notions d’origine, d’héritage, d’appartenance, de la famille, de la spiritualité et de l’existence. Le sentiment de vide partagé ces derniers temps par une grande part de l’humanité, les a rassemblés autour d’un thème commun, longing en anglais – à savoir, ici, le désir de se trouver ou de se retrouver, la nostalgie du passé, le regret des êtres disparus ou des rêves inaccomplis.
L’artiste américaine Julia Bland, le peintre anglo-thaïlandais Mark Corfield-Moore, l’artiste plasticienne suédoise Kristina Müntzing, l’artiste tisserande suédoise Emelie Röndahl, l’artiste textile suédo-chilienne Mariana Silva Varela et l’artiste tisserand français Côme Touvay ont tous des formations et des approches différentes dans leur pratique artistique. Ce qui les lie est l’entrecroisement des fils, la trame et la chaîne donnant vie à des histoires à la fois personnelles et universelles.
L’exposition présente une trentaine d’œuvres tissées qui forment un véritable parcours entre intérieur, cour et jardin de l’Hôtel de Marle. La sélection d’œuvres comprend également des vidéos d’artistes. Plusieurs pièces ont été réalisées spécifiquement pour l’occasion et sont donc montrées pour la première fois.
Curatrice du projet : la Suédo-Zimbabwéenne Marcia Harvey Isaksson, fondatrice et directrice de Fiberspace, une galerie dédiée à l’art textile à Stockholm.
