30 km south of Lyon, on the right bank of the Rhone, the archeological site of Saint-Romain-en-Gal - Vienne offers over three hectares the remains of a district of the Roman city of Vienne. In ancient times, Vienna, the capital of a vast territory covering the Dauphiné and Savoy, stretched on either side of the Rhone. Today, the archeological site and museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal transport visitors 2,000 years ago to one of the richest cities in Roman Gaul. Gallo-Roman mosaics are the major pieces of the museum. The museography is organized around the mosaic of the "punishment of Lycurgues" discovered in 1900\. The collections provide a complete overview of everyday life at that time. The chosen party is that of an ethno-archeological approach, with numerous reconstructions and models. The route allows you to discover the site and its history, including the mosaic of the “winning athletes” and the model of Vienna in the 2nd century AD. If the trade and economic importance of the city in antiquity are naturally evoked, the visitor can also measure the diversity of the decorations and the originality of the style of the mosaics of Vienna. Finally, dominating the archeological site, a presentation of the Roman house restores it in its setting.
