2 Rue Saint-Jacques, 30130 Pont-Saint-Esprit, France
Sumptuous medieval residence called 'Maison des Chevaliers' which, according to popular tradition, would have welcomed the knights of the Temple order upon their return from the Holy Land. Each of them would have painted their shield there to signal their passage. Known since the Middle Ages for the richness of its decorations, the house belonged to the family of Piolenc, a rich and powerful lineage of wheat merchants of the Rhone valley. In the 14th century, they built a remarkable court of justice at the heart of their residence, a testament to their power and attachment to royal power. In 1450, a painter returning from Tuscany, where the fires of the Renaissance were then shining, decorated their new state rooms overlooking the Rhône. A meticulous restoration has restored all its lustre to the medieval house and its exceptional painted ceilings which today serve as a showcase for the museum’s collections.
