Self-taught, the owner of the Poulaines estate, Valérie Esnault, draws her inspiration from her childhood memories and emotions to design her garden. The first pleasure gardens of the estate seem to have been built north of the castle in the mid-18th century. Subsequently, a number of trees are planted, now centuries-old – oaks, fevers and a majestic redwood – making the owner want to create a garden calling for the unity of an estate with varied atmospheres. To help her in this task, she first called upon the landscaper Pierre Joyaux who built, at the end of the 1990s, along fruit bushes, a water path built in terraces following a plan in the shape of a cross of Saint-André. On both sides, the terraces welcome a greenery room offering aromatic plants and a pergola of white wisteria inspired by English gardens. Then, the owner met the nurserymen Claudie and Gérard Adeline with whom she decided to create an arboretum of more than 300 species. Finally, she asked the nurseryman Christian Coureau to cut the boxwood into clouds and plant bamboo in the shape of a wave. This atmosphere, with various shapes, smells and colors, invites the walker to stroll in these spaces full of intimacy and biodiversity.
