The origin of Moutiers dates back to 450, when Saint Jean de Réôme, a hermit settled in Corsaint, founded a community. In the 6th century, the monks came to settle in Moutiers. The abbey is considered to be the oldest in Burgundy. Its abbey church of the 12th century, destroyed during the Revolution, had nothing to envy to that of Vézelay or Autun. At the end of the 17th century, the Maurist reform and the wise administration of Father Claude Charles de Rochechouart de Chandenier, friend of Saint Vincent de Paul, marked the beginning of reconstructions and a new boom. In the 18th century, the title of abbot of Moutiers-Saint-Jean was given to the bishops and dukes of Langres to compensate them for the creation of a bishopric in Dijon. It was these princes of the church, and notably Monsignor de Montmorin de Saint-Hérèm, who built the abbey palace between 1747 and 1763 by the architect Claude Louis d'Aviler. It is this palace, which became a castle in the 19th century then a farm in the mid-20th century, that was taken over in 2013 by two enthusiasts who bring the place back to life and present beautiful furniture collections. During your visit, you will be able to discover ten furnished rooms with the atmospheres of the 18th century.
