The former imperial palace, which became the Palais du Rhin in 1920, was one of the highlights of the great urban planning plan drawn up in Strasbourg after 1871 with the aim of creating a vast administrative and residential district to the north-east of the old town. The architect Hermann Heggert was retained and the final project adopted in 1883\. The construction will take place between 1884 and 1888\. The stables were finished in 1885\. The building was rebuilt identically after the bombings of 1944\. The vast three-level quadrangle is a fine example of eclecticism, in honour of official German and Austro-Hungarian architecture at the end of the 19th century. Device with imitated embossing of the Pitti Palace in Florence. Dominant Renaissance with borrowings from Antiquity. The sculptors Bergmeier, Klein-Riegger and Ottman decorate the eastern facade. The ground floor houses the vestibule of the main staircase in Renaissance style and the princely suites. The first floor features the large audience hall with its dome opening onto the "balcony of acclamations", the emperor’s apartment in Renaissance style, and the empress' apartment in Rococo style. The entire western part is reserved for the three large state rooms. The garden was originally conceived as a historical garden containing a large number of rare species.
