The Château de Montréal, built in 1535 during the first Renaissance, stands on the remains of a medieval fortress surrounded by ramparts from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its facades, adorned with mullioned windows and columns, as well as its chapel housing the recumbent figure of François de Pontbriand and his wife, perfectly illustrate the sculptural art of the Renaissance. The gardens, gradually installed on the old ramparts, were redesigned at the beginning of the 20th century by the landscape architect Achille Duchêne. He created terraces and a French-style garden, of which today remain refined elements. Outside the ramparts, Montreal Park houses a star-shaped carcass. Inside the enclosure, three gardens await visitors: a low Italian-style garden, planted with yews, white and purple hibiscus, and adorned with walls covered with cream roses and white clematis; a regular garden arranged on two terraces; and finally a small garden decorated with fascines. The plantations, carefully chosen, compose captivating harmonies of colors.
