Der Dichter, Intellektuelle und Staatsmann Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906–2001) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Schriftstellern des 20. Jahrhunderts.
1975 vereinte er seine Élégies majeures in einer gemeinsamen Ausgabe. Überzeugt vom Dialog zwischen Poesie und bildender Kunst beauftragte er deren Illustration mit Alfred Manessier, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva und Étienne Hajdu, die die Texte durch abstrakte Gravuren und Lithografien erweiterten.
1976 arbeitete der Dichter mit André Masson an Chants d’ombre, das unter anderem eine Sandzeichnung für die Schachtelgestaltung enthielt.
Diese Werke, die ab 1978 in der Nationalbibliothek Frankreichs und 2023 im Musée du Quai Branly ausgestellt wurden und durch eine großzügige Schenkung in die Sammlungen gelangten, werden nun erstmals im Grafikkabinett des Museums für Moderne Kunst präsentiert. Sie bieten ein außergewöhnliches Beispiel für die Begegnung von Poesie und Bildender Kunst in der Nachkriegszeit.

The poet, intellectual, and statesman Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906–2001) is among the most prominent writers of the 20th century.
In 1975, he brought together his Élégies majeures in a single edition. Convinced of the dialogue between poetry and visual arts, he entrusted its illustration to Alfred Manessier, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and Étienne Hajdu, who extended the texts through abstract engravings and lithographs.
In 1976, the poet collaborated with André Masson on Chants d’ombre, which notably included a sand drawing for the box set.
Exhibited from 1978 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and later in 2023 at the Musée du Quai Branly, these works—added to the collections through a generous donation—are now presented for the first time in the museum’s prints and drawings cabinet. They offer an exceptional example of the post-war encounter between poetry and visual arts.

Nel 1975 riunì le sue Élégies majeures in un’unica edizione. Convinto del dialogo tra poesia e arti visive, ne affidò l’illustrazione ad Alfred Manessier, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva ed Étienne Hajdu, che ampliarono i testi attraverso incisioni e litografie astratte.
Nel 1976 il poeta collaborò con André Masson per Chants d’ombre, che includeva tra l’altro un disegno con sabbia per il cofanetto.
Esposte dal 1978 alla Bibliothèque nationale de France e poi nel 2023 al Museo del Quai Branly, queste opere — entrate nelle collezioni grazie a una generosa donazione — sono presentate per la prima volta nel gabinetto delle arti grafiche del museo. Offrono un esempio eccezionale dell’incontro tra poesia e arti visive nel dopoguerra.

Convaincu du dialogue entre poésie et arts plastiques, il en confie l’illustration à Alfred Manessier, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva et Étienne Hajdu, qui prolongent les mots par des gravures et lithographies abstraites.
En 1976, le poète collabore avec André Masson pour Chants d’ombre, illustré notamment d’un dessin au sable pour l’emboîtage.
Exposées dès 1978 à la BnF, puis au musée du Quai Branly en 2023, ces oeuvres, qui ont rejoint les collections grâce à un généreux don, sont présentées pour la première fois dans le cabinet des arts graphiques du MAM. Elles offrent un exemple exceptionnel de la rencontre entre poésie et arts visuels dans l’après-guerre.
