Im Zentrum der sogenannten "Schule von Berck", die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Gefolge von Ludovic-Napoléon Lepic entstand, haben die Künstler lange Zeit ihren Blick auf das maritime Leben, die Fischer, die gestrandeten Boote und das wechselnde Licht der Opalküste gerichtet. Dieses Repertoire, das tief in der Realität verwurzelt ist, hat die Identität einer informellen Gruppe geprägt, die sich mit der sensiblen Transkription eines damals im Wandel begriffenen Gebiets befasst.
Aber diese Maler nach Berck-sur-Mer zu bringen, hieße, ihre Ausbrüche zu ignorieren. Viele von ihnen, wie Francis Tattegrain oder Jan Lavezzari, haben andere Landschaften, andere Figuren und andere Zeitlichkeiten erforscht. Geschichtsmalerei, städtische Szenen, antike Ruinen oder symbolträchtigere Kompositionen: so viele "Umwege", die von einer Neugier und Freiheit zeugen, die oft durch die Bedeutung der Motive von Berckois in ihrem Werk überschattet werden.

At the heart of what is called the "Berck school", born in the wake of Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic at the end of the 19th century, artists have long fixed their gaze on maritime life, fishermen, stranded boats and the changing light of the Opal Coast. This repertoire, deeply rooted in reality, has shaped the identity of an informal group attached to the sensitive transcription of a territory then in full mutation.
But to reduce these painters to Berck-sur-Mer would be to ignore their escapes. Many of them, like Francis Tattegrain or Jan Lavezzari, explored other landscapes, other figures, and other temporalities. History painting, urban scenes, ancient ruins, or more symbolic compositions: so many "detours" that testify to a curiosity and freedom often overshadowed by the importance in their work of Berckois motifs.

Al centro della cosiddetta "scuola di Berck", nata sulla scia di Ludovic-Napoléon Lepic alla fine del XIX secolo, gli artisti hanno per lungo tempo fissato il loro sguardo sulla vita marittima, sui pescatori, sulle barche incagliate e sulla luce cangiante della Costa d'Opale. Questo repertorio, profondamente radicato nel reale, ha plasmato l'identità di un gruppo informale legato alla trascrizione sensibile di un territorio allora in piena trasformazione.
Ma ridurre questi pittori a Berck-sur-Mer significherebbe ignorare le loro fughe. Molti di loro, come Francis Tattegrain o Jan Lavezzari, hanno esplorato altri paesaggi, altre figure, altre temporalità. Pittura di storia, scene urbane, rovine antiche o composizioni più simboliche: tante "deviazioni" che testimoniano una curiosità e una libertà spesso eclissate dall'importanza nei loro lavori dei motivi berckois.

Au cœur de ce que l’on nomme l’ «école de Berck», née dans le sillage de Ludovic-Napoléon Lepic à la fin du XIXe siècle, les artistes ont longtemps fixé leur regard sur la vie maritime, les pêcheurs, les bateaux échoués et la lumière changeante de la Côte d’Opale. Ce répertoire, profondément ancré dans le réel, a façonné l’identité d’un groupe informel attaché à la transcription sensible d’un territoire alors en pleine mutation.
Mais réduire ces peintres à Berck-sur-Mer serait ignorer leurs échappées. Nombre d’entre eux à l’instar de Francis Tattegrain ou Jan Lavezzari ont exploré d’autres paysages, d’autres figures, d’autres temporalités. Peinture d’histoire, scènes urbaines, ruines antiques, ou compositions plus symboliques : autant de «détours» qui témoignent d’une curiosité et d’une liberté souvent éclipsées par l’importance dans leur œuvre des motifs berckois.
