Port de Chandon 37270 Athée-sur-Cher
Indre-et-Loire
Centre-Val de Loire
The site allows to visualize the fluvial heritage of the Cher valley, one of the main navigation routes in the Loire basin in the 19th century. The Cher was developed to promote this navigation, with the construction of dams with needles, a major technological innovation for the time. Built from stone, wood and metal, manipulable with the hand of a man, the dam still works. It is accompanied by a lock, and a lockhouse of remarkable architectural quality. The dam also adjoins a much older mill, witness of past activities and beautifully restored. The whole offers a beautiful landscape perspective. At the port of Chandon, it is the trace of ancient commercial activity that remains. This past is highlighted by the cabanée Valchantray, rebuilt from plans of the time.
