This priory, devoted to Saint Jean the Evangelist, was based(established) at the end of the XIth century, the beginning of the XIIth century, and depended on the abbey of the Chair-God in Auvergne. Entirely restored in 1990s, it is one of the most cryptic monuments of Saintonge. The church, the bedhead of which remains(subsists), is conceived(designed) on an exceptional octagonal plan. To see also: the chapter house with its polylobed bows(arcs) and its crossings of ogives of the XIIIth century, the cellar, the large refectory with its wall paintings(paints) and the dormitories of the monks adorned with frescoes. The abbey welcomes a Contemporary Arts Centre proposing all year long a permanent dialogue between the Romanic monument and the artists of today. In 900 m, the floral park of 2 hectares «The Gardens of Compostelle», landscapist on a Spanish-Moorish inspiration works of an architect, overhangs the lake of the Wood full of flowers.
