At the dawn of the 16th century, the reputation of the convent grew thanks to its school, which saw several humanists pass: a rector of the university of Heidelberg, Jodocus Gallus; his nephew Conrad Pellican, philologist and theologian; the historian Materne Berler; the auxiliary bishop of Strasbourg Johannes Siegrist; the cosmographer Sebastian Münster; Valentin Boltz, miniaturist, colorist and playwright; as well as Conrad Lycosthenes, grammarian and science popularizer.
In 1564, the convent was abandoned, after that, in recent times, there were only two brothers who occupied it. A first attempt at repopulation, in 1565, was cut short when conventual buildings were severely damaged by fire. The convent was then entrusted to two priests and one brother-in-law.
In 1591, the convent was repopulated on the initiative of the bailiff of Rouffach, count Eberhard de Manderscheid-Blankenheim.
