The Cité de la Musique is organized in two wings on either side of the Grande Halle de la Villette, along Avenue Jean-Jaurès. Christian de Portzamparc chooses to dissociate the functions to avoid a single building centered on the hall: On the one hand the study spaces, on the other those dedicated to the public. The west wing hosts the Conservatoire de Paris, with amphitheaters, studios, teaching rooms, media library and housing. Its monumental facade, white and curved, is reflected in a body of water, under an undulating cornice. Architecture plays on light, transparency and various shapes (cone, cube, patio…). The east wing includes a concert hall (800 to 1,200 seats), studios, an amphitheater, the music museum and administrative spaces. Organized around a spiral gallery, the “Rue Musicale”, it stands out for its fragmented and sculptural volumes.
