Jean-Marc Decrop hosts a new exhibition dedicated to the committed work of the Franco-Tunisian artist Meriem Bouderbala, in the chapel of the Château du Grand Launay.
The Franco-Tunisian artist Meriem Bouderbala lives in Tunis. From a French mother, she acquired French nationality and the decoration of Officer of Arts and Letters during her stays in France.
The installation presented here, "L'odyssée des migrants - BOZA et ORDALIE" tells in 7 panels the story of a woman who migrates to leave for Europe and falls into an abyss. She transmutes during this journey into a mermaid, a skeleton, a hippocampus, a hybrid animal, a chimera...
There is a claimed parallel between this crossing of migrants to Lampedusa and the history of the slave trade. The arrangement of slaves in the holds of ships of the slave trade is compared with the crowding of migrants in today’s inflatable boats.
The material used as a matrix is made of traditional mortuary mats woven by craftsmen, which are used in Africa to transport the dead to their final resting place. The artist sees them as vehicles, evoking a passage by boat or canoe. These mats are covered with embroidery and poor materials - pieces of fishing nets, waste found in nature, pieces of metal and plastic cut with a soldering iron...
