Around 1530, Charlotte de Mancip, the heiress of the estate of Bournazel, married Jean de Buisson, son of a rich family of bankers from Toulouse. Started with the North wing around 1540, the construction of the castle is supervised by Charlotte because Jean will participate in the fourth and last Italian war in 1544\. When Jean returns in 1545, the second phase of the work has begun. The main staircase and the east wing in double gallery level thus recall not only the structure of the Roman triumphal arches but also, through the rich sculpture of the facade, the ancient ideals theorized in particular by the Latin architect Vitruvius: the three architectural orders are clearly visible on the facade where a frieze represents gods and ancient characters in a complex iconographic program. This architectural modernity finds its full extent in the grand staircase. Opposing the defensive architecture of the old castle, the staircase invites to the passage towards the garden.
