The villa des Brillants, a modest bourgeois residence in the neo-Louis XIII style dating from the second half of the 19th century, was acquired by the sculptor Auguste Rodin in 1894\. After 1900, he had a pavilion built in the park to be used as a workshop. The whole was bequeathed to the State upon the death of the sculptor in November 1917\. Rodin is buried in the park. The museum was built in 1928 by the architect Henri Favier. It incorporates remains of the old castle of Issy-les-Moulineaux, dating from the end of the 17th century and bought by Rodin during its demolition in 1903.
